2020 East-West Shrine Bowl
St Petersburg, Florida: Since 1925 some of the brightest stars in college football converge for a post-season all-star game benefiting a great cause. The East-West Shrine Bowl features some of the biggest names in the game playing to support the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. This year’s game featured a shoot-out which saw the East beat the West 31-27 in front of 12,894 spectators at Tropicana Field in St Petersburg.
The first score of the afternoon came when Florida International’s quarterback James Morgan hit Louisiana’s wide receiver Ja’Marcus Bradley for a nine-yard touchdown strike. The East added another touchdown in the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by Charlotte’s Benny LeMay to make it 14-0. The West then cut the lead in half on a 7-yard touchdown reception by San Diego State’s Parker Houston on make it 14-7 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter was quiet on the touchdown front, but both squads exchanged a pair of field goals in the half. The first came from Cooper Rothe from Wyoming who hit a 26-yard field goal for the East. Then a little later in the quarter, Utah State’s Dominik Eberle delivered a 28-yard field goal for the West. At the end of the half, the East took a 17-10 lead into the locker room.
Following half-time, the West marched down the field to tie the game in the third quarter. A 36-yard strike from North Texas quarterback Mason Fine to Ohio State wide receiver Binjimen Victor to tie the game 17-17.
The fourth quarter was a wild shoot-out which saw a few lead changes. The West took their first lead of the afternoon on a 26-yard field goal by Eberle. But the East answered by scoring a touchdown following a 52-yard run by Navy’s Malcom Perry to regain the lead. The West bounced back with a big touchdown run of their own, a 63-yard run by Illinois running back James Robinson to take the lead back. The East later grabbed the lead to stay on a 9-yard touchdown run by LeMay to give the East the 31-27 win.
LeMay was named the Offensive MVP of the Game as he finished the afternoon with 15 carries for 86 yards and 2 touchdowns. Illinois State’s Luther Kirk was the Defensive MVP of the Game, picking up the games only interception with a second quarter interception.
With the East’s win, the all-time series stands with the West winning 51 and the East winning 39 of the annual game.
