Photo of the Day: Protector of the Beasts

Image
The iconic P-51 Mustang was the air ace of World War II. In addition to being a prize dog fighter for the US Army Air Force, the P-51 also had the roll of protecting the larger slower bombers. If it wasn't for the protection of the P-51, the fleets of B-17's would be sitting ducks to the much faster aircraft of the Luftwaffe. This 3/4 scale model of the P-51 is on display at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force in an eternal dog fight with its nemesis, a scale model of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G. After a long process of trying to secure a B-17 Flying Fortress for their collection, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force was able to obtain one from the Smithsonian Institute. Today, the aircraft is being restored to its full glory as the “City of Savannah”, the 5,000 B-17 processed at Hunter Field in Savannah. The restoration work can be seen close-up as the aircraft sits on display at the museum. (Photo: March 15, 2014)
