Photo of the Day: Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall

The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall made a visit to Englewood this week. The 3/5 scale traveling memorial is a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington DC. Managed by the Vietnam and All Veterans of Brevard, the Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall allows people from all over to pay their respects to the men and women who paid the ultimate price during the Vietnam War. The memorial will be in Englewood through the weekend with a memorial service scheduled for 10am on Saturday. (Photo: November 30, 2012)

Since 1874, the St. Augustine Lighthouse has helped guide ships through the treacherous waters off the coast of St. Augustine. The keeper’s house was built to house the keeper and his family in 1876. It would remain the residence of the keep until the lighthouse was automated in 1955. Today the house is a museum that houses exhibits about the history and importance of the St. Augustine Lighthouse. (Photo: November 13, 2011)

2012 Venice Holiday Parade

Venice, Florida: With Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday behind us, thousands of spectators lined the streets of Venice to kick off the holiday season with the 37th annual Venice Holiday Parade. Spectators braved the brisk November weather to watch over a hundred performers march in this years parade. The festivities kicked off at five with a celebration that filled the air with holiday music and lit up the sky with lights as the Venice Avenue merchants lit up their holiday displays. Then at 7, the parade began its journey down the parade route. The adventure began on Park Avenue and headed down Venice Avenue, entertaining the crowd all the way to the Venice Community Center. Several thousand entertainers representing over 120 organization comprised the parade. The parade was sponsored by the City of Venice and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. One of the oldest occupied houses in St. Augusting, the Tovar House was built by Jose Tovar, a Spanish soldier in 1763. The house exchanged hands several times before being purchased by the Historical Society in 1918. It is believed to be one of the most haunted buildings in St. Augustine.(Photo: November 13, 2011)

A B-25 Mitchell performs at MacDill Air Fest in 2011.  The B-25 Mitchell was a medium range bomber used heavily in World War II.  The B-25 earned fame during the Doolittle Raid on Japan.  This allied bomber remained in service through the war and was finally retired by the US Air Force in 1960.  Severa B-25's remain in airworthy service belonging to museums and collectors.  (Photo: November 6, 2011)

As much of the nation enjoys a day off today, lets take a moment to honor the veterans in which this day of remembrance has been established for. Originally declared Armistice Day in 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson, the holiday was established to honor the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge declared Armistice Day a nation holiday to be honored yearly on November 11. Then in 1954, President Dwight D Eisenhower honored a movement to change the name of holiday to Veterans Day to honor all Veterans who served the nation. (Photo: November 3, 2012)

Wings over Homestead

Homestead, Florida: The skies overhead roared to life with the sounds of jet engines as the Homestead Air Reserve Base hosted Wings over Homestead. The base hosted several hundred thousand visitors who came to see aerial acts highlighted by the US Air Force Thunderbirds. The free show kicked off Saturday with amaing aerial acts on both days. Some of the performers that dazzled the crowd included the host Fighting Makos, aeriel acrobaics of Rob Holland, the Black Diamond Jet team and of course the highlighted act, the Thunderbirds. There were over five hours of aerial demonstrations between the variety of performers ranging from World War II era through modern day. In addition to the aerial acts, there were plenty of static displays on the ground. From the big jets of Air Mobiliy Command such as the C-17 Globemaster to the sleek fighters of Air Combat Command like the F-22 Raptor, they were all on display for visitors to get a close up look. The 2012 Wings over Homestead...

The 22 minute ride combines audio-animatronics with live actors to bring to life some of Hollywood’s greatest films. The show debut in October 2006 and features many of the popular Disney characters including Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Peter Pan and many more.
