In the 1800's, the railroad was king of the country. These mechanical marvels connected the country and made travel easy. This boasted the country's tourism and the railroad companies reflected this by building elegant train stations in big cities across the map. This is Church Street Station in Orlando.  Built by the South Florida Railroad in 1889, it would provide a depot for Central Florida travelers. The Atlantic Coast Line would take over the station and construct the historic station that stands today. Trains still stop here as part of Sunrail commuter system, but the main function of Church Street Station today is to serve as an entertainment hotspot in downtown Orlando.  Taken: July 9, 2013 (Orlando, FL)

A Day at the Beach

Image
A short walk past the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse leads you over the sand dunes and to the beach at Gasparilla Island State Park. Still relatively unspoiled, the beaches here are some of the best on the Gulf coast of Florida.  Located on the tip of Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island State Park features a series of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. The park preserves miles of coastline, two historic lighthouses and a historical chapel. Part of the Florida State Park system, it is a popular place for residents and tourists alike.  Taken: May 7, 2023 at Gasparilla Island State Park (Boca Grande, FL)

Lady in Blue

Image
Slow but deadly, that is the motto of the SBD Dauntless built by Douglas Aircraft. A workhorse of World War II, the Dauntless is the only US combat aircraft to see service from the start until finish of the war. It was also one of the most destructive weapons in the Navy, sinking 300,000 tons of the Japanese fleet including 18 warships and five carriers. The SBD performing here during the Florida International Air Show is the Lady in Blue from the Commemorative Air Force. Photo of Day: The Small Details

Image
When you look around the spring training home of the Orioles, you will find hints of Baltimore all over. From the food at the concession stands to some of the iconic orange bird signage. But look closely at the small details and you find even more Baltimore nostalgia. The seats at the renovated stadium are from Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The seats were removed during a project at Camden Yards and then refurbished and installed at the Orioles southern nest. (Photo: August 28, 2021)

Photo of the Day: Gators Everywhere

Image
Sunning on the bank, a bunch of little alligator keep warm in the Florida sunshine. Once a gator reaches 4 feet in length, they no longer have any natural predators besides human and larger gators. Until then, the younger gators have a colored banding on their tail that help them to hide in the brush of riverbanks link this.. See how well the real small gators blend into the dirt and brush of this photo. How many gators can you see in this photo? (Photo: December 24, 2018)
