Wandering Through Historic Downtown Crossville: Where Faith Meets Simplicity

Image
Tucked along the Cumberland Plateau, downtown Crossville offers more than just a glimpse into Tennessee’s past—it invites you into a slower, more intentional way of experiencing the present. From the moment you step onto its streets, there’s a quiet charm that settles in. Historic brick buildings line the roads, each one holding stories of generations who have passed through. Local shops and family-owned businesses add a personal touch, reminding visitors that this is a place built on community, not convenience. As I wandered through downtown, I found myself drawn not just to the architecture or the small-town character, but to the stillness. In a world that often feels rushed and overwhelming, Crossville provides a rare opportunity to pause. And in that pause, there is space—space to reflect, to breathe, and to reconnect with what truly matters. There’s something deeply spiritual about places like this. Maybe it’s the simplicity. Maybe it’s the way time seems to slow just enough for y...

It’s not a long or difficult hike, but what waits at the end makes every step meaningful. The trail begins quietly, winding through a canopy of trees that filter the sunlight into soft, dancing patterns along the forest floor. There’s a stillness here—broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves or birdsong—that invites you to slow down. It’s the kind of place where distractions fade and your thoughts begin to settle. As you approach the overlook, the forest begins to open, almost as if it’s preparing you for what’s ahead. Then suddenly, the trees give way to a breathtaking view across the Cumberland Plateau. Rolling ridges stretch into the distance, layered in shades of green and blue, fading gently into the horizon. Standing at the overlook, it’s hard not to pause. Moments like this feel intentional—like ...

Seven Bridges Trail: Finding Peace in the Quiet Places

Image
In the stillness of the forest, far from the noise of everyday life, there are places where creation seems to gently whisper rather than shout. The Seven Bridges Trail in Fairfield Glades is one of those places—a path where the presence of God can be felt not in grandeur, but in the quiet details. From the very first steps along the trail, the sound of flowing water becomes a steady companion. Small streams wind through the woods, moving effortlessly around weathered boulders that have stood the test of time. There’s something grounding about watching the water move—steady, patient, and unhurried—reminding us of the peace that comes when we trust God’s timing. Each of the wooden bridges along the trail offers a moment to pause. As you cross from one side to the other, you’re invited to slow down and take in the beauty that surrounds you. Sunlight filters through the trees, reflecting off the water below, while the forest hums quietly with life. In the warmer months, wildflowers line th...

Where History and Nature Unite in Tennessee

Image
Nestled in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Stones River National Battlefield is a place where American history comes alive amid peaceful rolling fields and shaded walking trails. Today, it offers visitors not only a window into the past but also a serene space to reflect and explore. A Brief History: The Battle of Stones River The Battle of Stones River took place from December 31, 1862, to January 2, 1863 , and stands as one of the war’s bloodiest encounters. It was fought between Union forces under Major General William S. Rosecrans and Confederate troops led by General Braxton Bragg . The two armies clashed just after Christmas, in bitter cold conditions. Over the course of three days, they exchanged fierce assaults and counter...

Thanksgiving Break Road Trip: Day One

Image
Fairfield Glades, Tennessee:  For those of you who know me or follow the site, you know we love the mountains.  I have spent my 23 year career working in public safety in Florida and as that career winds down, I am looking forward to retiring to the mountains.  I grew up in Lebanon, Pennsylvania and moved to Florida when I graduated high school because I hated working in the months of cold and snow.  I decided to work in reverse, work in Florida and then return north when I retire and won't have to work in the cold.   As the time gets closer, we are starting to take trips to explore small towns to find that perfect fit.  We are leaning towards Tennessee but trying to narrow down the right spot.  We recently toured Sevierville and English Mountain.  On this trip we are headed to Crossville and Fairfield Glades. We hit the road bright and early at zero dark thirty for our trip north. From our home, we have about an eleven hour drive.  We ...

The calm and relaxing waters of the Little Pigeon River can provide a great day of activities for anyone. From laying along the banks working on your tan to having a picninc on the shores to trying to catch a fish, the river is a great place to spend the day. Another way to experience the river is to hop on a tube and go for a ride. On our last trip to the Smoky Mountains we did just that, we grabbed a tube from River Romp and took the a ride on the calming rapids of the river. (Photo: June 5, 2018)

When traffic along the Cades Cove loop comes to a complete stop you can be pretty sure a bear has been spotted.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home over 1,500 black bears and Cades Cove is a great place to see them.  The park is one of the largest protected habitats for the bears and they are plentiful in the park with an average of 2 bears per square mile of the park.  Just remember if you encounter a black bear on your trip through the mountains, be sure to keep a safe distance between you and the bear while enjoying the moment of catching one of these amazing animals in the wild. The scarred mountainside and shells of burnt out dwellings dot the usually lush Smoky Mountains months after the Chimney Tops fire. The fire started in November 2016 and burnt almost 18,000 acres before fire crews got it under control. The complex of fires destroyed 2,460 buildings and killed 14 people. It was one of the largest natural disasters in the history of Tennessee and the deadliest wildfire in the eastern US since 1947. This photo is from the Gatlinburg bypass taken about six months post fire and shows some of the burnt out treelines and a structure that was lost during the fire. (Photo: June 14, 2017)
