Photo of the Day: Gasparilla Island State Park

At Gasparilla Island State Park in Boca Grande, the shoreline becomes a natural treasure trove where the gentle Gulf waves deliver an ever-changing mosaic of seashells. Known for its rich shelling, the beach is often scattered with sand dollars, scallops, and coquinas, especially after a calm tide or passing storm. The soft, white sands and clear waters create the perfect backdrop for beachcombers to wander slowly, eyes down, discovering delicate patterns and colors shaped by the sea. It’s a peaceful, rewarding experience—part relaxation, part treasure hunt—set against the timeless beauty of Florida’s Gulf Coast.   Taken: January 25, 2009 at Gasparilla Island State Park (Boca Grande, FL)

A Black Spiney-tailed Iguana basks in the morning sun atop a pristine sand dune on the barrier island of Boca Grande, a popular destination off the coast of Southwest Florida. This particular species of lizard, often characterized by its distinctive, heavily-keeled tail scales, is unfortunately not native to the region. It is classified as an invasive species within the delicate coastal ecosystem.  The presence of the Spiney-tailed Iguana is a significant concern for local conservationists and environmental managers. As an invasive species, it competes directly with native wildlife for resources, including food and prime basking and nesting locations. Furthermore, these lizards can reach considerable sizes and have a broad, omnivorous diet, which includes plants, fruits, insects, and, critically, the eggs and hatchlings of various native ground-nesting birds and reptiles, including threatened species like the Gopher Tortoise and various sea turtle species that nest on these same du...

Standing at the southern tip of Gasparilla Island, the Port Boca Grande lighthouse is a steadfast beacon, guiding vessels through the perilous entrance to Charlotte Harbor. Its light, a silent promise, has cut through the gloom for over a century, offering assurance of safe passage past the harbor's shifting shoals and strong currents. This historic structure has been an indispensable navigational aid, safeguarding countless mariners, and now also functions as a maritime museum. Visitors can explore its deep commitment to maritime safety and its connection to a rich history of commerce, fishing, and shipping. A Day at the Beach

Image
A short walk past the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse leads you over the sand dunes and to the beach at Gasparilla Island State Park. Still relatively unspoiled, the beaches here are some of the best on the Gulf coast of Florida.  Located on the tip of Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island State Park features a series of beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. The park preserves miles of coastline, two historic lighthouses and a historical chapel. Part of the Florida State Park system, it is a popular place for residents and tourists alike.  Taken: May 7, 2023 at Gasparilla Island State Park (Boca Grande, FL)

A Guiding Light

Image
Standing at the mouth of the Boca Grande Pass, the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse provides a guiding light for ships transitioning from the Gulf of Mexico into Charlotte Harbor. Since 1890, the lighthouse have navigated ships into the harbor and the nearby Port Boca Grande. Over the years, the need for the lighthouse diminished as a newer lighthouse was installed nearby and the port was eventually closed, but the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse survived demolition by both natural means (hurricanes, coastal erosion) and human means (decay and demo). Today the restored lighthouse is a museum and part of the Gasparilla Island State Park.  Gasparilla Island State Park is a barrier island park featuring several miles of coastline and beaches along the Gulf of Mexico. Within the boundaries of the park, both lighthouses are preserved. Visitors can tour the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse as it is one of only six lighthouses in Florida that the public can tour. The taller Gasparilla Island Rear...

Photo of the Day: Silent Seclusion

Image
With miles and miles of coastline, a short walk leads you to a stretch of beach that is secluded where you can sit in the silence and enjoy the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. If you don't want the hustle and bustle of the big beaches, take a walk and find a spot that makes you feel all alone.  This is one of the beaches that makes up Gasparilla Island State Park. Located on the barrier island of Boca Grande, the park features several beach accesses. While the two lighthouse beaches are the busiest, a stroll down the beach will lead you to a less people and pretty soon its just you and the beach left.  Taken: April 6, 2008 at Gasparilla Islands State Park (Boca Grande, FL)

Locals and tourists aren't the only ones who enjoy the clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico. A pair of brown pelicans play in the surf at Gasparilla Island State Park on the tip of Boca Grande, Florida. The barrier island features some of the nicest beaches in the area and one of the best beaches to find shells on the Gulf coast.  Taken: March 7, 2020 at Gasparilla Island State Park (Boca Grande, FL)

Gasparilla Island State Park: Beaches

Boca Grande, Florida: Located on the barrier island of Boca Grande, Gasparilla Island State Park encompasses over several miles of beachfront.  From these beaches, visitors have access to some of the nicest stretches of Gulf of Mexico in the state of Florida. There are four primary beaches as part of the Gasparilla Island State Park.  The beach access are: Sandspur Beach (home of the Gasparilla Rear Range lighthouse) Seagrape Beach Seawall Beach/South Beach Lighthouse Park on Boca Pass (home of the Port Boca Grande lighthouse) Each of these beaches have their own unique characteristics and are all excellent facilities. Photo of the Day: Lighting the Night

Image
The light of the Boca Grande Lighthouse provides a beacon of light in the night sky. The lighthouse was commissioned in 1890 and remained in service until 1966. It was reactivated in 1986 as an aid to navigation under the US Coast Guard. You can tour the lighthouse which is part of the Gasparilla Island State Park. (Photo: April 16, 2016)

Photo of the Day: Fishing in the Gulf

Image
When it comes to fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, one of two things are for certain. Either you hook the big one or you end up with a big story. There is so much good fishing along the Gulf coast. Here in Boca Grande, fisherman come from all over the world to angle a tarpon. From April through August, the Boca Grande Pass is home to the world's largest collection of Tarpon. But there is much more than tarpon to catch off this coast. Redfish, Speckled Trout, Spanish Mackerel and many more can be caught without ever leaving the beach. And a short trip off-shore will lead to Mahi Mahi, Grouper, Snapper, Amberjack and even sharks. (Photo: March 15, 2015)

Photo of the Day: Just Beaching It

Image
A colorful shell lays along the surf at Gasparilla Island State Park. This state park beach located at the tip of Boca Grande is a popular place for shelling. Its positioning along the gulf coast as well as the currents in the pass sweep loads of shells up on the beach at the tip of the island. Shells of all shapes and colors can be found filling the beach making it a great place to look for shells whether you are a local or a tourist. (Photo: March 8, 2015)

Photo of the Day: Crystal Clear Waters

Image
The calm, crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Mexico in Boca Grande is a welcomed sight to residents and visitors alike. This barrier island mixes a quaint seaside town with quiet beaches for a one of kind stay fit for a president. In fact both President’s George HW Bush and George W Bush have been known to vacation here regularly. (Photo: March 18, 2012)

Photo of the Day: Guiding Light

Image
The light atop the Boca Grande Lighthouse has served as a guiding light for vessels navigating ships to the Boca Grande Pass, the mouth of Charlotte Harbor.  First lit in 1890, the Boca Grande Lighthouse provided an aid to navigation until being decommissioned in 1966.  After being rescued from deterioration, the light was reactivated by the US Coast Guard in 1986.  Together with the Gasparilla Rear Range Light further down the island, the lighthouse helps guide ships in and out of Charlotte Harbor.  While the light itself is maintained by the Coast Guard, the lighthouse is now a museum and part of the Gasparilla Island State Park operated by the Florida State Parks system.  (Photo: March 27, 2010)

Photo of the Day: Fruit of the Sea

Image
Found along coastal Florida and the Caribbean, the sea grape is a one of the tropical shrubs that make up the coastal landscape. This flowering plant produces grape-like fruit which can be eaten or used to make jams.  In addition to producing fruit, the sea grape is beneficial to the coastal environment because combined with mangroves, it helps prevent coastal erosion.  (Photo: January 25, 2009)

Photo of the Day: Flashback to a Clear Waters and No Red Tide

Image
For the past few weeks, the news and social media has been inundated with photos of the fish kills along the Gulf Coast of Florida as a result of Red Tide.  Today I figured we'd roll back the clock a little and remind people of how the Gulf waters should look.  This is the crystal clear waters at Gasparilla Island State Park on the island of Boca Grande.  With several miles of coastline, the beaches here are some of the most natural, pristine beaches in the state.  A short drive over the toll bridge transports you away from the hustle and bustle of the mainland beaches to island time where things are just a lot more relaxed.  (Photo: April 6, 2008)

Photo of the Day: Clear Tranquil Waters

Image
The clear, tranquil waters of the Gulf of Mexico will make you feel like you've been transported to a distant tropical oasis but in all actuality, you never left the mainland United States.  The beaches of the barrier island of Boca Grande have some of the best beaches in the state and rival the beaches found on exotic islands with clear water, soft sand and plenty of sun.  (Photo: March 15, 2015)

Photo of the Day: Grabbing a Bite to Eat

Image
A snow egret grabs a bite to eat along the surf line at Gasparilla Island State Park.  The snowy egret is a small wading bird and can be found along the edge of the water feeding on shrimp and small fish.  The snowy nests in the mangroves and can be found throughout the state of Florida where they live year-round.   (Photo: March 8, 2017)

Photo of the Day: Great Day at the Beach

Another beautiful beach day at Gasparilla Island State Park on the island of Boca Grande.  Clear waters and shell filled beaches draw visitors to this barrier island which feels more like the tropics than mainland United States. (Photo: March 18, 2012)

Photo of the Day: Wild Iguana

Image
A wild iguana clings to a tree at Gasparilla Island State Park on the tiny island of Boca Grande.  The non-native reptiles were introduced by a resident in the 1970's when they released a trio of iguanas on the island.  By 2006, the population swelled to over 10,000 due to the iguana not having any natural predators on the island.  Today, an effort to control the species has reduced the number of iguanas on the island.  (Photo: January 25, 2009)
