Photo of the Day: Natural Wonder of Georgia

Image
One of the seven natural wonders of Georgia, the Tallulah Gorge is an impressive canyon in north Georgia. Stretching for two miles in length and featuring cliffs that are 1,000 feet tall, the gorge was created by the Tallulah River cutting through the dome. The flow of water starts at Tallulah Lake and then drops to the canyon floor through a series of six waterfalls, the largest being the 96 foot Hurricane Falls. Once it reaches the canyon floor, the river continues to move south before joining several other rivers on their journey to the Atlantic Ocean. You can catch a glimpse of this natural wonder from an overlook at the rim of the gorge or if you want a closer look you can hike to the floor of the canyon for an up close look. The gorge can be viewed from above via the scenic overlook or from the ground inside the Tallulah Gorge State Park.  (Photo: June 6, 2016)

While we did not have time to stop in the park to fully explore what it has to offer, we did manage to stop at the scenic overlook at the rim of the gorge.  There is a scenic bypass off of US-23 that passes over the sound rim of the gorge and features a great roadside attraction called Tallulah Point.  From their covered porch you can get a look at the beauty of the gorge. The 2,600 acre state park features hiking trails, a museum, campsites, a beach for swimming and many more amenities.  Adventurous hikers can hike to the floor of the gorge after obtaining a permit from the ranger station.  Only 100 permits ar...
