Photo of the Day: Legend of the Red Baron

Image
Look up, it’s the Red Baron. Well not the World War I ace Red Baron, but the bi-plane sponsored by Red Baron Pizza. This was once part of the Red Baron Squadron, an aerial aerobatic team founded in 1979. The four ship team would travel the country demonstrating what life was like for prospective fighter pilots as they learned the basics in the Navy and Army Air Force trainers. The team suffered a catastrophic accident in 1998 and resulted in the team being disbanded. One of the remain planes is pictured here on display at MOSI but would later be moved to the Florida Air Museum at Lakeland Linder Airport. (Photo: September 11, 2016)

The raw power of fire is one of the many natural disasters that could be experienced in side the Disasterville exhibit that was displayed at MOSI in Tampa.   This former exhibit spotlighted the raw power of Mother Nature and the damage that can be caused by the extreme effects of tornadoes, hurricanes and wildfires.  This exhibit was removed from MOSI in advance of future changes to the Tampa science museum  (Photo: September 6, 2008)

The museum is home to hundreds of exhibits and Florida’s only IMAX dome theater. MOSI is the largest science museum in the Southeast United States and the fifth largest in the United States. The history of a science museum dates back to 1962 when Hillsborough County created a youth science museum in Sulfur Springs called the Museum of Science and Natural History. The museum continued to grow and in1967 it was renamed the Hillsborough County Museum. As the museum continued to grow and develop, it quickly outgrew its location and needed a new home.
