FHSAA Playoffs: Venice Indians vs Armwood Hawks
Venice, Florida: The weather may have been chilly, but the action of the field was hot as the Venice Indians hosted the Armwood Hawks in the Class 6A Regional Semifinals on Friday night at Powell-Davis Stadium. There was a lot riding on this game as the winner will get their ticket punched for the Regional Finals and be one step closer to the State Championship while the loser will see their season come to an end.
Coming into the game, Venice was looking to avenge their loss to the Hawks last season in the opening round of the playoffs. But the Hawks came to Venice as one of the hottest teams in the league, only surrendering 23 points on the year and not giving up a single point in their last five games.
The Indians got the ball to start off the game. They marched the ball quickly downfield before a fumbled stalled the drive. From there it only took one play to put the Hawks in the endzone as quarterback Noah Johnson connected with receiver Dennis Harris for a 32 yard touchdown pass to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead.
Venice tied the game in the second quarter. Freshman quarterback Bryce Carpenter hit tight end Aaron Carpenter for a 15 yard strike to tie the game 7-7.
Armwood capitalized on another turnover for their second touchdown of the night. Hawks linebacker Jordan Griffin stripped the ball from the hands of the Indians and took it 23 yard to paydirt to put the Hawks back out in front 14-7.
Another Venice turnover would set up the Hawks next scoring drive. Corner Aaron Covington picked off Carpenter to set up a 13 yard touchdown run by Erin Collins to give Armwood a 21-7 advantage heading into the locker room at the half.
The Indians fought back in the second half. Senior Langston Provitt broke free and took the ball to the house on a 65 yard touchdown run to pull Venice to within a touchdown of the lead with a little over 8 minutes left in the third quarter.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the Hawks. They scored twice in about a minute. The first came on a 47 yard jump ball in the corner of the endzone to Cordell Pimenta for the score to put Hawks up 28-14.
Then from their own 5 yard line, Venice fumbled yet again, recovered by Covington who reached across the goal line for a quick seven points and a commanding 35-14 lead.
Armwood saved their best drive for last. This time they marched 95 yards down the field, capping it off with Johnson hitting Harris for a nine yard touchdown pass, his second of the night to put the nail in the coffin for the Indians and securing a 42-12 lead for the Hawks.
Turnovers proved to be the Achilles heel for the Indians. They turned the ball over 6 times resulting in 28 points.
The loss ended the season for the Indians. The 2014 Venice Indians finished 10-1 and won their 12th district championship.
The Hawks head to the Regional Finals where they will play the Gainesville Hurricanes.
