Photo of the Day: Symbol of the Nation

Since 1782, the bald eagle has served as a symbol of the United States of America.  When the nation was founded in 1776, the founding fathers sought to create a symbol for the fledgling nation.  The original design created by Pennsylvania lawyer William Barton featured a white bird as the centerpiece of the symbol but Secretary of Congress Charles Thomson made the recommendation to use the American bald eagle as the centerpiece.  The new symbol was adopted by Congress on June 20, 1782 and has represented the United States of America ever since.  (Photo: July 21, 2018)
