Charlotte Stone Crabs vs St. Lucie Mets
Port Charlotte, Florida: The Charlotte Stone Crabs won their seventh game in a row by defeating the St. Lucie Mets 8-7 on Sunday evening at Charlotte Sports Park. The Stone Crabs lost their lead midway through the game but walked off with the win thanks to a ninth inning RBI by Isaias Velasquez. It was a big night for Stone Crabs fans as Carlos Pena was playing tonight on an MLB rehab assignment, leading off as the designated hitter. It was also the first start for newly promoted pitcher Kirby Yates, who just joined the Stone Crabs after being promoted from Bowling Green.
The Stone Crabs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Carlos Pena and Tim Beckham led off the inning with back to back singles. Pena then advanced to third after Stephen Vogt grounded into a double play. Greg Sexton drove home the run with an RBI single to score Pena to give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs added to their lead in the second inning. Michael Sheridan opened the inning with a walk. Jake Jefferies followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. Kyeong Kang knocked home the first run with an RBI single to left. Matt Hall followed with a walk to load the bases. Pena plated the second run with a single to right that scored Jefferies and gave them a 3-0 lead.
St. Lucie fought back to take the lead in the sixth inning. Hector Pellot walked to lead off the inning. Rafael Fernandez then delivered a single to center. Wilmer Flore drove home the Mets first run with a double to left. Eric Campbell then drove home Fernandez with a ground out to third. Stefan Welch gave the Mets their first lead with a base clearing two run homer to give them a 4-3 lead.
But the Stone Crabs fought back with a long ball of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Sexton drew a walk followed by a single by Sheridan to put two runners on the bases. Jake Jefferies then cleared the bases with a three run home run to retake the lead 5-4.
The Mets grabbed the lead right back in the top of the seventh. A three run homer by Michael Fisher gave the Mets a 7-5 lead.
However it was the late game heroics of the Stone Crabs that sealed the victory in the bottom of the ninth inning. Beckham doubled to left followed by a walk to Vogt to get things going. Following the walk, Chris Murrill checked into the game as a pinch runner for Vogt. Sexton moved both runners into scoring position with a ground out to second. The Mets then decided to intentionally walk the red hot Sheridan, loading the bases for the Stone Crabs. A bases loaded walk to Jefferies tied the game. That brought Sunday’s hero to the plate, Velasquez ripped a line drive to center, driving home Murrill for the game winning run.
Neil Schenk earned the win for the Stone Crabs.
