Charlotte Stone Crabs vs Jupiter Hammerheads

Jeremy Hellickson makes a start for the Stone Crabs.Port Charlotte, Florida: After two consecutive days of rain-outs, the rain stayed away long enough for the Charlotte Stone Crabs and Jupiter Hammerheads to play a doubleheader on Thursday night. The Stone Crabs swept the twin bill at Charlotte Sports Park.

Game one was dominated by the Stone Crabs starting ace Matt Moore. His work on the mound combined by a big fly by Tyler Bortnick gave the Stone Crabs a 4-0 shut-out victory.

The Stone Crabs took the lead in the second inning. Ryan Royster led off the inning with a double to right field. Stephen Vogt followed with a ground ball to second, but a throwing error by Jupiter’s second baseman led to Royster scoring and giving the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs picked up some insurance in the sixth inning. Tim Beckham doubled to left then later stole third base. Vogt then drew an intentional walk to put runners on the corners. Tyler Bortnick then delivered a three run homer to left, his first hit as a Stone Crab to give them the 4-0 margin of victory.

Moore pitched 6 shut-out innings enroute to the victory. In the process, he struck out 10 hitters to bring his year total to 197, three shy of the league record. Zach Quate came on in the final frame to earn the save.

Game two was a little closer affair. The Stone Crabs rallied back in the late innings to earn the 5-4 win.

Just like game one, it was the Stone Crabs drawing first blood. Kyeong Kang drew a walk to get things going. Isaias Velasquez then singled to move Kang to third. Bortnick then reached on a fielders choice, scoring Kang. Beckham drove home Velasquez and Bortnick to give the Stone Crabs a 3-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs increased their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Beckham drove home Velasquez to make the score 4-0.

Joe Cruz was cruising through the lineup, throwing a shut-out through the first four frames before being pulled from the game for Jeremy Hellickson. Hellickson joined the Stone Crabs from the Rays on an assignment to adjust from being a starting pitcher to a reliever. Hellickson struck out the side in the fifth but struggled in the sixth inning, giving up four runs on four hits and two walks before being pulled from the game.

The Stone Crabs regained the lead in the sixth inning. Jake Jefferies singled to left to put a runner on the bases. Michael Sheridan drove home the go ahead run with a line drive to second, scoing Jefferies and giving the Stone Crabs the 5-4 win.

Marquis Fleming earned the win, improving to 4-0 on the season.
