Magic Kingdom: Adventureland

Lake Buena Vista, Florida: As you cross over the bridge, you are quickly immersed in dense tropical foliage and sounds of excitement in the distance. No you have not traveled to a distant jungle, you are in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom park. Split into two areas, the Arabian Plaza and the Caribbean Plaza, it is home to some of the park’s popular attractions.

One of the original lands of the Magic Kingdom, Adventureland opened in 1971. While it has evolved a bit over the years, it is still home to two of the parks original attractions, the Jungle Cruise and the Swiss Family Treehouse.

Originally designed for Disneyland, the popular Jungle Cruise attraction was adapted for the Disney World and opened with the park on opening day. Here you embark on a journey on some of the most famous rivers in the world. The steam ship operated by the Jungle Navigation Company takes you through the Amazon River, Congo River, Nile River and the Mekong River before returning back to the dock. Along the way you will encounter animatronics animals, escape danger from native tribes and laugh at the comedy of your skipper.

The other opening day attraction still in operation is the Swiss Family Treehouse. Here you can tour the 60 foot tree house inspired by the Disney film Swiss Family Robinson.

Another one of the park’s famous attractions, the Pirates of the Caribbean opened in 1973, just two years after the grand opening of the park. Located in a Spanish fort, the 8 ½ minute rides goes into the hear of a pirate’s life. Pass by an intense battle between a pirate galleon and a fort and then enter the town where the pirates are in search of the town’s treasure. Then the pirates take a break from plundering to have a few drinks and party before burning the town down. As you finish the ride, you pass by Captain Jack Sparrow enjoying the riches of the treasure room. The ride has been renovated throughout the years with a major renovation in 2006 to add inspirations from the feature film franchise by the same name.

The Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management stage show opened in 1998 to replace the opening day attraction Tropical Serenade. The ten minute show is a musical comedy featuring some of the famous scores and birds from Disney animation. The show was closed for refurbishment in early 2011 following a fire that damages the Lago figure. It is scheduled to reopen in summer 2011.

The newest ride to be added to Adventureland is the Magic Carpets of Aladdin. Opened in 2001, the ride is the same concept as the popular Dumbo ride in Fantasyland. Climb aboard a flying carpet for a high flying ride around the genie’s lamp but beware of the spitting camels outside the ride.

If you get hungry while in Adventureland, here are the restaurants located here:
  • Aloha Isle: pineapple dole whips and citrus swirls.
  • Tortuga Tavern- counter service restaurant featuring tacos, nachos and hot dogs.
  • Sunshine Tree Terrace- milk shakes, floats, slushies and snacks.

If you are looking for gifts and souvenirs, you can try these Adventureland shops:

  • Agrabah Bazaar: Aladdin themed merchandise

  1. Great Blog friend. Lake Buena Vista is a city in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is mostly known for being home to the Walt Disney World Resort. The Magic Kingdom is the most enjoyable places in this city. It is major attraction for all visitors and especially for Kids. I personally visit in this places before my hawaii day tours. I really enjoy in Magic Kingdom. It is the first-built of the four theme parks at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida.
