Day One: Walt Disney World Trip May 2011

Orlando, Florida: We decided to utilize our Disney season passes to celebrate our son's sixth birthday by taking a three day trip to Disney World. For the first time in many trips to the mouse of the mouse, we decided to stay off-site at the Nickelodeon Studios Suites off International Drive.

We checked into the hotel early and our room was already available. The check-in was simple and the staff was very polite. They gave us a complimentary upgrade from a standard room to a pool view room. We were assigned room 152 of the oasis building, a fifth floor unit overlooking the oasis pool.

The room is a two bedroom suite with a kitchenette consisting of a microwave, fridge and coffeemaker. The master bedroom has a queen size bed while the second bedroom had 2 twin beds.

After we moved our bags into the room, we headed out to explore the resort. We toured the ground and then headed to the lagoon activity area where we played some basketball and mini golf. Afterwards we headed to guest services to reserve seats for the evening shows and transportation to the parks.

Then it was off to the pools. The pool closest to us was closed so we headed over to the lagoon pool, the main pool and activity center of the resort. The highlight of the pool is the waterslide structure that has several slides, fountains and water features. After almost two hours of playing in the water, it was time to get out of the sun for a while and have some lunch.

We ate lunch at the grill inside the mall of the resort. My wife had a bacon cheeseburger, I had chicken fingers and our son had a corn dog. The food was average resort food but the cost was considerable cheper then other theme park hotels we have stayed at. After lunch it was back to the room to put the rugrat down for a nap.

Once nap time was over, it was back to the pool for round two. Once again, the highlight once the waterslides. Then at 4:45 we headed to the mass sliming where my son and I joined a group of people in the daily slime event.

Then we went back to the room to get ready for the evening shows. The first show was the Spongebob show. The thirty minute show featured all of the favorites from the cartoon. Then after a brief break, went to the second show, Slime Time Live, a stage show featuring challenges and trivia resulting in one person getting slimed at the end. Both shows were great and entertained the entire family.

After the shows, we headed to dinner at the Nick Toons Cafe. They had an all you can eat buffet that had something for everyone for a reasonable price.

When dinner was over, we headed back to the room for the night. Early morning tomorrow as we head to the Magic Kingdom.
