Port Orleans Riverside
Lake Buena Vista, Florida: A mix of elegant mansions and rustic cabins dot the coastline of the Sassagoula River as it winds through the Port Orleans Riverside Resort at Walt Disney World. It is here where rural Louisiana is recreated for a unique Florida resort hotel. The resort opened in 1991 as the Dixie Landings Resort. In 2001, the hotel was renamed Port Orleans Riverside in conjunction with a merger with the neighboring Port Orleans Resort. The two hotels, Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter remain two separate facilities but join together to recreate the Old South from the French Quarter to the antebellum mansion and finally the rustic bayou cabins further up river.
Port Orleans Riverside is two resorts rolled into one. The first section is the area closest to the city and thus the more elegant buildings. Magnolia Bend consists of four mansion with over 1,024 guest rooms. The buildings are built to resemble the rich southern plantations.
Further up the Sassagoula River is the Alligator Bayou section of the resort. Nestled between the swamps and thick foliage are sixteen rustic lodges that have 1,024 more guest rooms. The buildings are designed to look worn and weathered.
Central to both regions of the resort is Ol’ Man Island. This 3 1/2 acre island is home to many of the resorts amenities. Here you will find the main swimming pool with waterslide, the playground, and a dock where you can go cane pole fishing. The resort also has five more pools scattered amongst the resort, three in Alligator Bayou and two in Magnolia Bend.
A short walk from Ol’ Man Island will take you into the Sassagoula Steamboat Company. This is the main building for the resort, housing all of the guest services as well as restaurants, shopping, an arcade and marina. Here you will find the following:
- Boatwright’s Dining Hall: full service restaurant.
- Fulton’s General Store: gift shop.
- Medicine Show Arcade: arcade style games.
- River Roost: lounge.
- Riverside Levee: boat and bike rentals.
- Riverside Mill: cafeteria style restaurant.
The Port Orleans Riverside Resort is a member of the moderate class of Disney resorts. It features mid-range pricing and amenities. Like all Disney resorts, it features complimentary transportation to the theme parks, water parks and Downtown Disney. It also participates in Extra Magic Hour in which one theme park opens early or stays open late each day for guests of resort hotels.
