North Port Bobcats vs Venice Indians
The Bobcats won the toss and elected to defer to the second half. On the first play from scrimmage, Brandon Engell recovered a fumble to give the Bobcats the ball on the 18 yard line. The drive stalled on the 6 yard line and Gasto Orsetti kicked a 21 yard field goal to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
The Indians answered back with a 67 yard scoring drive that ended with a QB keeper by Grant Flessner for the score. The keeper and the point after gave the Indians a 7-3 lead.
The Bobcats forced another fumble to set up their second scoring drive. Quinn Bass recovered a fumble on the 26 yard line during the Indian’s punt return. The Bobcats drove the ball to the 8 yard line on a rush by quarterback Paul Balcomb. But like the other drive, the offense could not get into the end zone. The field goal by Orsetti pulled the Bobcats to within a point of the lead 7-6.
But from there, the Indians showed why they are in first place. They struck for 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a commanding lead.
The first drive went 63 yards on three plays. Jeff Blackburn was on the receiving end of a 45 yard pass by Flessner to give the Indians first and goal. Then it was Danny Dillard taking the ball in on a five yard scamper to give them a 14-6 lead.
The next drive saw Flessner air it out again, this time connecting with Wesley Ojeda for a 52 yard reception. That drive also ended with Dillard carrying the ball into the end zone on a 3 yard rush, increasing the lead to 21-6.
But the Indians were not finished, striking yet again before halftime. The Indians special teams recovered the squib kick. They then marched the ball 50 yards down field to score again. Flessner hit Kody Sallis in the end zone for a 4 yard TD pass to give the Indians a 28-6 lead heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
The Indians picked up right where they left off when play resumed in the second half, scoring on both of their possessions in the third quarter while keeping the Bobcats off the scoreboard.
The Indians first drive of the third quarter went 62 yards on 7 plays and ended in a 6 yard touchdown run by Dillard.
Dillon later scored on a 29 yard run to cap of the second drive of the third quarter, increasing the Indian lead to 42-6. The touchdown run put Dillard over one hundred yards on the night for the sixth consecutive game.
The fourth quarter saw the Bobcats reach the end zone twice, striking for 14 unanswered points to finish the game.
The Bobcats drive started on their own 20 yard line with a little of three minutes left in the third quarter. The drive ended with Jason Petrone scoring on a touchdown run. The Bobcats completed the two point conversion to bring the score to 49-14.
The Bobcats got the ball back with a five minutes remaining in the game. They drove the ball from the 50 yard line to the end zone with Brandon DeShields picking up six on the touchdown run. The two point conversion failed and the Bobcats suffered a 49-20 loss.
The loss dropped the Bobcats to 0-2 in the division and 2-4 overall for the season.
The Bobcats (2-4) look to avenge the loss when they head south next Friday to take on the North Fort Myers Red Knights (3-3-1).
