Photo of the Day: Little Redhead

A little redhead stands out along the bark of an oak tree at Caloosahatchee Creeks Preserve while this woodpecker searches for food. Despite its red head, this is actually called a red-bellied woodpecker. Like most woodpeckers, this little guy uses its pointed beak to hammer away at trees causing the insects to scatter for his next meal. The red-bellied woodpecker is one of more prevalent species found on the west coast of Florida and can be seen in urban through rural landscapes. (Photo: December 24, 2018)
