Photo of the Day: Sunset in the Sunshine State

For a state known as the Sunshine State, it is only fitting that Florida boasts some of the most spectacular sunsets in the country if not the world. With miles of coastline on the Gulf Coast, there are plenty of places to catch a colorful sunset like this one here from the Sunshine Skyway outside St Petersburg. If you pay close attention to the sunset, right before the sun dips below the horizon you may be lucky enough to catch the green flash. It is a phenomenon caused by the light prisms refracting in the Earth's atmosphere as they disappear one wavelength at a time with the green color being the last to appear for a brief second or two.
