Charlotte Stone Crabs vs Dunedin Blue Jays
Port Charlotte, Florida: In the game of baseball, one unluckly hop can make or break a game and that was the storyline Tuesday night as the Charlotte Stone Crabs fell to the Dunedin Blue Jays 10-3 at Charlotte Sports Park. That one unlucky hop came on a two out ground ball that extended the inning for the Blue Jays, allowing them to push across six runs to take a commanding lead.
The Blue Jays broke the scoreless tie by taking advantage of that critical Stone Crab error in the second inning. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with one out. Charlotte starter Michael Velasquez quickly recorded a strikeout for the second out of the inning. Then it look like he was about to get out of the inning with no harm, a ground ball to third took a bad hop resulting in the third baseman Kevin Padlo overthrowing first which allowed Juan Kelly and Lane Thomas to score. Cavan Biggio drew a walk to reload the bases before a grand slam by Max Pentecost would clear the bases and give the Blue Jays a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning. The speedy Mallex Smith was on a rehab assignment from the Tampa Bay Rays and opened the frame with a triple to center. Smith later scored on a ground out by Brett Sullivan to give the Stone Crabs their first run of the night.
Dunedin picked up three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Derrick Loveless drew a walk to lead off the inning. Loveless scored on a triple by Thomas. Thomas then scored on a double by Mike Reeves. Reeves later scored on a sac fly by Andrew Guillotte to increase their lead to 9-1.
The Stone Crabs scored a pair of runs in the seventh. Ryan Bolt led off the inning with a single followed by a double by Dalton Kelly. Bolt would score on a ground out by David Olmedo-Barrera. Then Kelly scored on a sac fly by Jake Cronenworth to make it 9-3.
The Blue Jays added one last run in the ninth inning. Biggio scored on an RBI single by Danny Jansen to hand the Stone Crabs a 10-3 loss.
Despite the loss, the Stone Crabs had one bright spot offensively. Cronenworth singled in the sixth and doubled in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.
