Charlotte Stone Crabs vs Jupiter Hammerheads

Port Charlotte, Florida: The Jupiter Hammerheads headed over to the west coast for a series against the Charlotte Stone Crabs and took command of the series after sweeping the series opening doubleheader on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Game one saw the visiting Hammerheads squeeze out a 3-1 win on the arm of starter Jorgan Cavanerio. Game two saw an offense explosion by the visiting Hammerheads as they cruised to 12-4 win in the night cap.

While Cavanerio was getting things done on the mound, the Hammerheads offense went to work to spot their starter a lead. They pushed across a pair of runs in the second on a two-run double by Brad Haynal. Jupiter added another run in the fifth on a sac fly by Brian Anderson that scored Junior Sosa to give the Hammerheads a 3-0 lead.

The Stone Crabs scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh. Jace Conrad doubled to left and scored on a single by Cristian Toribio. But they couldn’t find a way to close the gap as they fell 3-1.

Cavanerio picked up the win for Jupiter and Jose Velez notched the save. Chris Pike pitched a complete game for the Stone Crabs and was charged with the loss.

After a brief break, both teams locked in on game two of the doubleheader and this time the Hammerheads offense lit up the scoreboard in a 12-4 thumping of the home team. Jupiter pushed across three runs in the second and four more in the third to take a commanding seven run lead before allowing the Stone Crabs to score a run.

Things started to get out of hand in the second inning as the Hammerheads tagged knuckleballer Jeff Howell for three runs. A sac fly by Arturo Rodriguez gave them their first run of the game. The second run of the inning came in a double steal in which Brian Schales stole home. An RBI single by Justin Bohn would make it 3-0 Jupiter. Howell continued to struggle in the third as he gave up a single to Dexter Kjerstad and then walked Schales and Rodriguez to load the bases. A bases loaded walk to Rehiner Cordova, a sac fly by Sosa and an RBI single by Brian Anderson increased the Hammerheads lead to 7-0.

The Stone Crabs reached the scoreboard in the sixth inning when Alec Sole hit his second home run of the season, a solo blast to right.

Jupiter answered with a five run seventh to put the game out of reach. They sent 10 hitters to the plate to provide the power while the Stone Crabs countered in non-traditional style, using infielders on the mound in lieu of pitchers. Pat Blair, who started the night at second base faced the eight hitters of the inning. Manager Michael Johns then went to infielder Conrad to get the remaining two outs in the inning.

Charlotte threatened in the bottom of the seventh. A two-run triple by Landon Cray pushed across the first two runs of the inning. Then Cray scored on a sac fly by Conrad for the third run of the inning, but the deficit was too big to overcome as the Stone Crabs fell 12-4.

Jupiter starter James Buckelew tossed five scoreless inning to record his first win of the season. Howell was charged with the loss for the Stone Crabs.
