A Quiet Slice of Old Florida: Taking a Stroll at Sleeping Turtles Preserve North

Venice, Florida:
Tucked away just east of downtown Venice, Sleeping Turtles Preserve North is one of Sarasota County’s best-kept secrets—a peaceful, lightly trafficked natural escape where Old Florida still feels wonderfully untouched. If you’re looking to trade beaches for shaded trails and wildlife encounters, this 174-acre preserve delivers a rewarding outdoor experience without the crowds.

Overview

Sleeping Turtles Preserve North is part of a larger protected area acquired through Sarasota County’s environmental conservation efforts in the early 2000s. The preserve’s name dates back to 19th-century naval maps that marked a landmark along the nearby Myakka River as “Sleeping Turtles.” Today, the preserve protects a diverse landscape of pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and floodplain swamps, offering a glimpse into Florida’s native ecosystems.

Trails & Hiking Experience

With over five miles of unpaved trails, the preserve is ideal for hiking, trail running, and even casual nature walks.
    • Trails are mostly flat and beginner-friendly, making them accessible for most visitors
    • Numbered trail markers help with navigation along interconnected loops
    • Shaded sections beneath oak canopies provide relief from Florida’s heat
    • A scenic river trail offers elevated views from bluffs overlooking the Myakka River
Expect a rustic experience—these are natural trails, so muddy or flooded sections can occur, especially after rain.

Wildlife & Nature Highlights

One of the biggest draws of Sleeping Turtles Preserve North is its wildlife. Visitors frequently spot:
    •  Alligators basking along the riverbanks
    • Gopher tortoises and turtles
    • Wading birds and songbirds
    • Occasional snakes and other native species
The preserve’s proximity to the Myakka River makes it especially rich in biodiversity, and the quiet atmosphere increases your chances of spotting animals in their natural habitat.

Amenities & Visitor Info

While the preserve is more rustic than larger parks, it still offers a few helpful amenities:
    • Free parking at the main trailhead on Border Road
    • Picnic tables near the entrance
    • Trail maps and informational kiosk
    • Benches along some trails for resting
Pets are welcome on a leash, but only on the north side of the preserve.

Tips for Visiting

    • Go early or late in the day to avoid heat and increase wildlife sightings
    • Bring water, bug spray, and sturdy shoes—trails can be uneven or damp
    • Download or photograph a trail map before heading out
    • Keep a safe distance from wildlife, especially alligators
Some visitors note that the preserve feels pleasantly uncrowded, making it ideal for those seeking solitude in nature.

Final Thoughts

Sleeping Turtles Preserve North isn’t about flashy amenities or polished boardwalks—it’s about immersion in Florida’s natural beauty. Whether you’re hiking beneath a canopy of live oaks, pausing at a bluff to watch the Myakka River flow by, or spotting wildlife along a quiet trail, this preserve offers a refreshing reminder of what Florida looked like long before development arrived. For travelers exploring the Venice area, it’s a perfect off-the-beaten-path stop that pairs beautifully with nearby beaches and parks—delivering a more rugged, authentic side of the Gulf Coast.

Sleeping Turtle Preserve North is located at 3462 Border Road in Venice, Florida.  It is open daily from 6am to sunset.  There is no admission or parking fees.
