Disney Imagineers are celebrated globally for the meticulous and detailed theming they infuse into the interiors of their theme parks. However, a lesser-known aspect of their genius is the way these immersive designs extend far beyond the park gates, permeating pretty much every facet of the Disney resort experience. Every element, down to the smallest detail, is carefully crafted to fully immerse guests into an elaborately constructed world of fantasy and adventure, ensuring the magic continues long after they leave the rides.
One outstanding example of this commitment to comprehensive storytelling is the "Dig Site" complex found at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. At first glance, it might appear to be nothing more than a well-designed resort pool area, centered around an impressively tall Mayan-inspired pyramid and featuring a standard playground structure. Yet, as guests take the time to explore the expansive grounds of the Dig Site, they quickly realize they are not merely at a pool, but are deep within a detailed, architectural excavation site.
The theming transforms what would otherwise be a simple recreational space into a compelling narrative experience. The main pool, known as the Lost City of Cibola pool, is anchored by the massive 50-foot pyramid, which serves as a stunning visual centerpiece and the source of a roaring waterfall. Scattered throughout the area are stone-carved relics, partially unearthed ruins, and faux-archaeological tools, all designed to make guests feel like intrepid explorers who have stumbled upon a forgotten, mysterious civilization.
Even the act of play becomes an exotic adventure. The children's playground is integrated into the "ruins" with slides and climbing areas designed to mimic exploration over ancient, crumbling structures. The Dig Site also features the largest outdoor hot tub on Disney property, capable of holding 22 people, and a white-sand volleyball court, providing additional opportunities for themed leisure. Through this comprehensive and detailed design approach, Disney Imagineers successfully turn everyday resort amenities into integral parts of an unfolding, imaginative storyline.
