Spotting Log: TPA

Tampa, Florida:
The day started like any other, a quick check of my phone upon waking. But this wasn't just any notification; it was a JetTip alert, signaling the imminent arrival of an Antonov at Tampa International Airport. This wasn't just any plane; Antonovs are a rare sight, massive cargo planes known for their unique design and sheer size. Coincidentally, we had already planned a trip to Tampa that evening for a concert. The opportunity was too good to pass up; we quickly adjusted our schedule to accommodate this unexpected aviation spectacle.

Arriving at the airport, we made our way to the top of the parking garage, a vantage point that promised an unparalleled view. And there it was, even from a distance, the Antonov's imposing silhouette was unmistakable. It dwarfed the surrounding aircraft as it gracefully maneuvered onto the west runway. The sheer scale of the plane was awe-inspiring; its massive fuselage, the sprawling wings, and the intricate network of landing gear were a sight to behold. The roar of its engines as it touched down demonstrated the immense power contained within this aviation marvel.

In addition to the Antonov, here is a list of all the aircraft we saw on our quick stop at TPA:
  • N246BZ - Airbus A220 (Breeze)*
  • N543US - Boeing 757-200 (Delta)
  • N669AW - Airbus A320 (American)
  • N841DN - Boeing 737-900 (Delta)
  • N914AN - Boeing 737-800 (American)
  • N936AN - Boeing 737-800 (American)*
  • N972NK - Airbus A320neo (Spirit)
  • N7848A - Boeing 737-700 (Southwest)
  • N8527Q - Boeing 737-800 (Southwest)
  • N8918Q - Boeing 737 Max 8 (Southwest)*
  • UR-82007 - Antonov AN-124 Ruslan (Antonov)*

One of the most popular spots for planespotting at Tampa International Airport is the top level of the short-term parking garage. This elevated position offers an expansive view of both runways, allowing for observation of arriving and departing aircraft. Additionally, the parking garage provides a clear sightline to the ramp area, where aircraft are parked, serviced, and loaded. This vantage point enables planespotters to capture a wide range of aircraft movements and activities.

Tampa's diverse airline traffic and flight schedule ensure a steady stream of aircraft activity throughout the day. Planespotters can expect to see a variety of commercial airliners, cargo aircraft, and private jets. The airport's role as a hub for several airlines also increases the likelihood of encountering unique and interesting aircraft.

Whether you're a seasoned planespotter or simply an aviation enthusiast, Tampa International Airport offers a prime location for observing and appreciating the dynamic world of aviation. With its accessible vantage points, diverse aircraft activity, and convenient amenities, the airport provides a memorable experience for all who visit.
