Spring Vacation: Day Two

San Antonio, Texas:
Our second day of the trip started with a walk over to the historic Alamo.  The riverwalk was quiet this morning following the St Patrick's celebrations the night before.  We strolled along the banks of the river until we reached the Alamo.

At the Alamo, we took a self-guided tour to of the Alamo and its historic buildings.  This old mission was the site of the Battle of the Alamo, a historic battle during the Texas Revolution.  Here Davey Crockett, William Travis and band of Texans were ambushed by the Mexican Army.  The original Mission San Antonio de Valero has been preserved along with other historic features of this mission.  The self-guided tour narrated by Ray Benson told the history of the Alamo.

When we completed the tour of the Alamo, we took a short walk to the other side of the plaza to board the Old Town Trolley Tour for a tour of the city.  Our trolley tour guide was BC and he took us on a informative and entertaining tour of the city.  The tour features fourteen stops across the city allowing you to hop off and hop on throughout the day.  We were going to stay on the trolley for an entire circuit to get the lay of the city but DC enticed us to get off in Market Square to enjoy some authentic Mexican food.

Following DC's recommendation, we had lunch at La Margarita.  We had the Parrilladas Estilo La Margarita which consisted of a family serving of Pollo al Carbon, Beef Fajitas, Baked Ribs, Country Sausage, queso Flameado and Papas Fritas. The authentic Mexican meal was really good and more food than the two of us could eat!

With full stomachs we continued to tour a little by foot to walk off lunch.  We made a stop at the Spanish Governor's Palace. Built in the 18th century, it was the palace of Presidio San Antonio de Béjar.  It was restored in the 1930's and gives a glimpse into the life of Marquis de San Miguel de Aguayo, governor of Coahuila and Texas from 1719 to 1722.  We then walked around the grounds of the San Fernando Cathedral which has patriots from the Alamo intombed in the entryway of the church.

We then hopped back onto the trolley for another lap around the city to complete the circuit.  Out of all the trolleys working today, we got lucky enough to get BC as our guide again.   We finished the tour of the city and when it was over, we walked over to Crockett's Tavern for dinner.  I had a delicious burger and my wife had a salad.

After dinner we walked along the riverwalk back to the hotel for the night. When we got back to the hotel.  We watched day two of the St. Patrick's Day parade from our balcony overlooking the river.

Tomorrow's adventures will take us to the zoo, Witte Museum and whatever fun we combine into the day.

Be sure to check back late for more from our trip.
