SWFL Yard Dawgs vs Clewiston Travel Ball

North Port, Florida:  The SWFL Yard Dawgs opened up their inaugural season with the 2018 Home Run Derby Classic hosted by Prostyle Tournaments.  The two day tournament featured six 13U teams in an open format with teams ranging from Majors down to AA.  The Yard Dawgs faced Clewiston Travel Ball in the first of two pool play games on Saturday afternoon at Atwater Park.

Clewiston jumped out to an early lead by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Cayson Holman led off the game with a single to right field.  Holman later scored on an RBI single by Jadin Herrera to put them on the scoreboard.  A pair of walks loaded the bases for Clewiston.  Then Jonathan Thompson drew a bases loaded walk to score Herrera to give Clewiston a 2-0 lead.

The Yard Dawgs cut the lead in half by pushing across a run in the bottom of the first.  They loaded the bases following three straight walks to lead off the inning.  Jake Patrick, Donte Taylor and MH Patrick all drew walks to put load the bags with no outs.  Jake Patrick then scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1.

After a scoreless second, Clewiston found themselves on the scoreboard again in the third inning.  Na'quan Kennedy reached base on an error.  He then stole second and later third to find himself just 90 feet from home.  A passed ball allowed Kennedy to score and increase the Clewiston lead to 3-1.

The Yard Dawgs pulled to within one by scoring in the bottom of the fourth.  Elijah Halcomb singled to third to reach base.  Halcomb then stole second and later advanced to third on a passed ball.  Another passed ball allowed him to score and make it 3-2.

The Yard Dawgs battled back in the bottom of the fifth.  With two outs in the inning, they pulled off a game wining two out rally to push across four runs for the win.  Connor O'Brien kicked off the rally with a two out single to second.  O'Brien then stole second right before Jake Patrick drew a walk to put runners at first and second.  Taylor tied the game with an RBI double, scoring O'Brien and moving Jake Patrick to third.  His brother MJ Patrick followed with a two run single to left, scoring Jake Patrick and Taylor to give the Yard Dawgs their first lead of the day.  An RBI double by Halcomb scored MJ Patrick and Halcomb would later score on an RBI double by Gabe Todaro to increase the lead to 7-3.  But the time limit would be reached, stopping the Yard Dawgs rally before the third out inning the innings as the Yard Dawgs cruised to their first team victory.
