Tampa Bay Rays at Baltimore Orioles

Sarasota, Florida: The Tampa Bay Rays ventured north to Ed Smith Stadium for a Grapefruit League matchup against fellow AL East competitor Baltimore Orioles. Despite having the long ball working for the home team, it was the consistent offense production of the Rays that lead to the 9-6 Rays win.

The Rays jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Steven Souza singled home Corey Dickerson to put the Rays on the board. Souza Jr later scored on an RBI single by Curt Casali to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.

Both teams exchanged runs in the second. In the top of the inning Dickerson singled home Braxton Lee. Then in the bottom, Orioles catcher Francisco Pena scored on an RBI single by Craig Gentry to make it 3-1.

The Rays pushed across a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Lee scored for the second time this afternoon on an RBI single by Nick Franklin. Franklin would later score on a single by Souza Jr to increase the led to 5-1.

The Orioles would get back a run in the fifth on the first of three home runs by the home team. This one was from outfielder Joey Rickard who delivered a solo shot to center to make it 5-2.

But the Rays would answer by posting two more to the tally in the sixth. An RBI double by Souza Jr would score Granden Goetzman. Then Jonah Heim plated a run with an RBI single to score Justin Williams to bring the score to 7-2.

The Orioles countered with a two run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth. RBI singles by Paul Janish and Anthony Santander would close the game to just three.

However the Rays stretched their lead again in the seventh with a pair of runs. Joe McCarthy scored on a ground ball by Alec Sole for the first run of the inning. Then a sac fly from Riley Unore plated Thomas Milone and extended the lead back to five.

The Orioles would get solo shots in the eighth and ninth. Janish went deep to left in the eighth and Chris Dickerson followed by going yard in the ninth. But it was too little too late as the Rays held on for the 9-6 win.

Lefty Blake Snell picked up the win for the Rays while Wade Miley was charged with the loss for Baltimore.
