Sun Herald Debut

I was a little surprised on Thursday morning when I received a Facebook message from the Charlotte Stone Crabs beat writer Josh Vitale. While the fact of receiving a message from him wasn’t surprising, it was the details of the message that was. He was inquiring if I would be interested in photographing the Charlotte Stone Crabs home opener for the Sun Herald.

While I originally had not planned to attend the game due to a conflict with my son’s Little League schedule, this once of a lifetime opportunity left me with a decision to make. After discussing this with my family and our coaching staff, I decided to accept the assignment.

As Saturday approached, a new excitement did as well. While I am usually excited for the home opener, this one had new meaning to me as well. Not only was I gonna be there for the fanfare of the opener, but I was there in an official capacity, to photograph the game for the newspaper. But then the nervousness set in. Was I good enough, were they going to like the photos. So many things were rushing through my head. It was amazing how something that I have done for the past nine years took on a new pressure just because of who was asking for the photos. Then the players took the field and away went all the nervousness and I quickly went to work trying to capture the action packed moments of the game.

Following the game, I headed home to process the photos and get Josh the ones he needed to meet his deadline. The days to follow, I continued to process the abundance of photos taken during the game for use on my website, 27 Outs Baseball as well as for the Stone Crabs and the Palm Beach Cardinals.

Monday's Sports Page
The Sun Herald ended up using two photos in Sunday’s paper and another in Monday’s edition. They also used a few on their Suncoast Sports blog and have plenty more should they need to use them.

This was an amazing opportunity and I am grateful to have accepted the assignment and look forward to helping again in the future should they need help.

It is still amazing to me how far my hobby has taken me.  To think, I picked up a camera to record memories and it has let to a website with over 5 million visitors and now photos published in the newspaper.  Thanks for being along for the ride and I look forward to what the future has in store.
