Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Naples, Florida: Over the past couple weeks, the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has posted some phenomenal wildlife photos on their Facebook page. Watching these photos made me want to go back and revisit the swamp so we decided to take the trek out to their boardwalk in eastern Collier County.
The park was hosting a Photo Safari over the weekend so what better time to go and enjoy a walk in the wilderness while taking photos of what we encounter. Our last trip back in 2010 provided a bunch of great photos so I was hoping that today would be no different.
During our exploration of the wilderness, we came across quite a few species including:
While the weather was still unseasonably hot for November in Florida, we still enjoyed our visit to Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. I can’t wait to come back and visit again and see what the boardwalk has to offer.
The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre preserve in eastern Collier County and is operated by the National Audubon Society. It is home to the largest stand of bald cypress forest in the world. The area was on the brink of destruction due to plume hunting and logging but an effort to preserve the forest has resulted in the creation of the sanctuary. Today visitors to the sanctuary can take a walk through the swamp on a 2.25 mile boardwalk. The boardwalk brings visitors face to face with nature without harming the delicate ecosystem.
The sanctuary is located at 375 Sanctuary Road West in Naples, Florida. They are open daily from 7:00-5:30. Admission is $14 for adults and is valid for two consecutive days.
