Photo of the Day: President Eisenhower’s Air Force One
President Dwight D Eisenhower’s presidential aircraft on display at the Florida International Airport. The L-26 Commander is the smallest Air Force One aircraft and served in that capacity from 1956 to 1960. (Photo: March 24, 2013)
That aircraft has shown up at Fort Lauderdale Exec from time to time, and I believe is painted to look like the aircraft Eisenhower used.
ReplyDeleteUnless I'm mistaken, the actual aircraft used was a part of the Wedell-Williams aviation collection on display at a museum in south Louisiana.
This looks like a 680E Commander. Phi had one when I started.
ReplyDeleteRob, I think you are correct.
ReplyDeleteRobert & Kent, thanks for the further information. The information I provided came from the program from the air show. It didn't say it was a replica so I assumed it was the actual plane.
ReplyDeleteThis was what the air show program had about the plane "This 1955-vintage Commander is 1 of 15 the U.S. Air Force bought from Aero Commander for use in the Presidential fleet. The story goes: after suffering a stroke and recuperating at his farm in Gettysburg, PA, President Dwight D. Eisenhower instructed his staff to get him an airplane that could take off in Washington, fly the 60 or so miles to Gettysburg, and land at his grass strip."
ReplyDeleteMy designation of U-4B was wrong, it is an L-26 Commander. Here is more on it's history http://www.flightlevelsonline.com/.../article/history.html
