Photo of the Day: US Capitol
A symbol of American power, the US Capitol is home to the Legislative Branch of the US Government. Located atop Capitol Hill on the east end of the National Mall, the US Capitol houses both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Construction began in 1793 and was not completed until 1811. The Capitol was damaged by fire during the War of 1812 after the British set fire to is in 1814 but was reconstructed shortly afterwards. In 1850, the Capitol expanded to add the Senate and House chambers. The iconic dome was added in 1855. The US Capitol was declared a National Landmark in 1960. (Photo: February 15, 2009)
