Charlotte Stone Crabs vs Palm Beach Cardinals
The Stone Crabs struck first, scoring in the third inning. Dustin Biell singled to center to lead off the inning. Greg Sexton later drove home the run with a single to short that was misplayed in the bright sunshine, Biell scored on the play and the Stone Crabs had a 1-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs threatened again in the fourth inning. With Mark Thomas on second and Chris Murrill on first, Hak-Ju Lee struck a single down the line. Thomas crossed the plate but Murrill was thrown out at third for the final out of the inning, canceling out the run.
The Cardinals tied the game in the fifth inning. Travis Tartamella singled to center with one out to put a runner on the bases. Tartamella advanced to second on a wild pitch by Frank De Los Santos. Philip Cerreto drove home the run with an RBI double to left that tied the game 1-1.
Palm Beach took their first lead of the afternoon an inning later. Ronald Ramirez and Zack Cox hit back to back singles to open the inning. Rainel Rosario drove home Ramirez with a double to left. Edgar Lara was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Palm Beach. Great defense helped limit the damage as a fly ball off the bat of Alan Ahmady was lost in the sunlight and fell between the defenders but Chris Murrill picked up the ball and fired a strike to home that got out Cox on the force. Then with the bases still loaded, the defense answered again with a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and keep the game from getting out of hand.
The Stone Crabs battled back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Lee and Tyler Bortnick led off the inning with back to back hits. Lee then stole third base to give the Stone Crabs runners on the corners. Sexton picked up his second RBI on the afternoon on a sac fly to score Lee and tie the game 2-2.
Palm Beach crossed the winning run in the top of the ninth. Alan Ahmady led off with a single followed by a walk to Tartamella. Jarred Bogany then reached on an error to load the bases. Luis Mateo drove home the go ahead run with a ground ball to short that scored Ahmady and gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.
The Stone Crabs put a runner in scoring positions in the bottom of the ninth but failed to bring him home as they fell 3-2.
