Charlotte Stone Crabs vs Bradenton Marauders
Port Charlotte, Florida: Over 6,000 fans packed Charlotte Sports Park to watch a preview of the first round of the playoffs as the Charlotte Stone Crabs faced their neighbor to the north Bradenton Marauders. Both clubs dueled toe to toe but when the dust settled and the game was over, the Stone Crabs fell 4-2.The Stone Crabs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Stephen Vogt drew a walk with two outs to put a runner on the bases. Vogt moved to second on a wild pitch. Then Greg Sexton hit a fly ball into shallow right that fell in the middle of the three Bradenton defenders, the hang time on the ball was enough to allow Vogt to score from second and give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead.
Bradenton tied the game an inning later. Eric Fryer singled to left to get things going. Then things took an odd turn. Calvin Anderson connected on a check swing and dropped the ball right in front of home plate. What appeared to be a dead ball, home plate umpire ruled a live ball and Anderson was tagged out by Vogt while still in the batters box. Fryer managed to beat the throw to second to avoid a double play. Adam Davis would then drive home Fryer to tie the game 1-1.
The Stone Crabs answered in the third inning. Reid Fronk led off the inning with a walk. Then Tyler Bortnick drove home the runner with a double to left field. Fronk’s score gave the Stone Crabs the lead again 2-1.
The Stone Crabs would hold the lead until the top of the sixth inning when Bradenton would strike for two more runs and take the lead. Quincy Latimore singled to left to lead off the inning. Fryer followed by hitting into a force out, losing Latimore at second. Davis then singled to right, advancing Fryer to third and giving the Marauders runners on the corners. Jordan Newton delivered a two run double to left, scoring Fryer and Davis to give them the lead 3-2.
The Marauders picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Robbie Grossman singled to center then advanced to third on a double by Starling Marte. Grossman later scored on a wild pitch to give them the 4-2 margin of victory.
Deivis Mavarez made a spot start for the Stone Crabs and left the game with a lead. Michael Jarman took over the game in the fifth inning and gave up 3 runs and took the loss. Scott Shuman made his Stone Crabs debut in style, pitching 2 1/3 no-hit innings to wrap up the game.
For Bradenton, Nathan Adcock picked up the win and Noah Krol recorded the save. The Marauders win over the Stone Crabs combined with Fort Myers loss clinched the playoff berth for Bradenton.
The Stone Crabs and Marauders will finish up the regular season on Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park before they meet again in the playoffs on Tuesday.
