Day Nine: Mid Atlantic Trip 2004

Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: We left Delaware in the morning to head back to Pennsylvania. We were going to spend a little more time with family in Lebanon before heading to the airport in Harrisburg.

We suffered our only glitch of the trip when we were trying to leave Harrisburg. It began when we tried to make it through security. My mom gave us an anniversary clock for our one year wedding anniversary we celebrated while on the trip on the 26th. To avoid having it broken in our checked baggage, we kept it in our carry on. Well it alarmed the TSA screener and we were taken aside into secondary screening while the examined the clock to make sure it wasn’t a bomb.

Then once they cleared the clock and returned it to us, we made it to the gate only to find out the plane was grossly overweight. The Comair representative said that since we were going to encounter heavy weather on the flight into Atlanta, they needed to take on more fuel. They asked four people to voluntarily give up their seats. No one complied so they moved onto plan B. Plan B was to reduce the cargo, they randomly removed luggage until they were within their safe operating weight and we took off enroute to Atlanta. The delay in Harrisburg cut us shorter on our connection then I would have liked, but we were there in plenty of time for the flight, just not enough time for dinner at the airport before boarding the plane.

Our Delta flight from Atlanta to Sarasota left on time and it wasn’t long until we arrived home in Sarasota. Upon approach to the airport, we came in from the northwest, over the barrier islands, what a great view. Once on the ground and we reached baggage claim we learned that one of our suitcases was one of the ones that was removed from the Comair flight to lighten the load. They already had arrangements in place for the return of the suitcase and it was delivered to our front door the next day by a courier.

What a whirlwind vacation. We visited seven states in a week, logging over 1,600 miles on the road and 2,134 miles in the air. The trip was great, wish we had more time to spend in the cities. Definitely will be back to NYC and DC. I would like to spend more time in each one of the cities with more time to get off the bus and see the experience the sights.
