Day Four: Mid Atlantic Trip 2004
New York, New York: Another day, another road trip. This time we are heading to the Big Apple, New York City. We hit rain and clouds in New Jersey, concealing the skyline of the city as we approached the Lincoln Tunnel. But once we came out of the tunnel into Manhattan, it was clear we had reached our destination. We dropped off the truck at the parking garage and checked into our hotel, the Holiday Inn Martinique. Located on the same block as the Empire State Building and across the street from Macy’s, we found its location to be ideal.
After dropping off our suitcases in the hotel room, we began the walk uptown to Times Square. From there we picked up the tickets for our tour on Grey Line Tours. We chose the 48-hour All Loops tour package, giving us unlimited boarding and unboarding on its double decker buses with four routes to choose from.
Despite the rain continuing to fall, we began our tour through Uptown Manhattan. Because of the weather, we decided to just ride and take in the sights. The loop took us through central park, the Upper West Side, Harlem and back to Times Square.
After the tour, we headed back to the hotel to take a break. But before we did, we stopped by the Empire State Building. We took the elevator ride up to the observation deck. From there we got a bird’s eye view of the city. Despite the rain and heavy fog, the view was still amazing.
Following a break and dinner, we took a brief subway ride back into Times Square. Here we boarded the bus for our next tour, the Night Light tour. The round trip tour took us through Manhattan and Brooklyn to see the city at night. Although the rain continued to fall, I managed to still make it around the city on the top of the bus, enjoying the sights of the city that doesn’t sleep.
While the city may not sleep, we decided it would be in our best interest to head back to the hotel and get ready for another day. The forecast called for a better day and we were looking forward to getting back at it in the morning.
