Miami
Miami, Florida: Located along the Atlantic Ocean in South Florida, Miami is the fifth populous city in the United States. It is also center to finance, media, entertainment, international trade and travel industries. Warm weather and hot nightlife attract thousands of visitors to the city each year.Miami was founded by Julia Tuttle, the only major city to be founded by a woman and became incorporated in 1896. Tuttle convinced Henry Flagler to extend the Florida East Coast Railroad into Miami and the city began to flourish. The city continued to grow through the early 1900’s. Population growth slowed towards the 1920’s due to the collapse of the Florida land boom in 1920, the Miami hurricane in 1926 and eventually the Great Depression in the 1930’s.
The growth resumed during World War II as Miami became a crucial part of the war efforts. Because of its location, it played a major role of the Naval efforts of the war. By the 1940’s the population of the city grew to over 172,000 people.
Miami began to see an influx of Cubans seeking refuge in the United State following the rise of Fidel Castro. Today Miami is one of the countries largest melting pot of ethnical backgrounds with many Latin American influences throughout the city. Miami is home to over 362,000 residents, making it the fifth largest city in the United States.
Miami is one of the leaders in the economic world. It has the largest number of world bank headquarters and is home to the corporate headquarters of some of the nations most popular companies. Bacardi, Burger King, Perry Ellis, Lennar, and most of the major cruise lines call Miami they corporate headquarters. Miami is also the Latin American headquarters to over 1,400 American companies.
The Port of Miami is one of the busiest cruise ports in the world. The ports see over 3 million passengers a year board cruise ships that originate from Miami. The cargo side of the port is also one of the busiest, bringing in over 7 million tons of cargo.
One of Miami’s best assets is its night life. Miami is known world wide for its contributions to the music industry. From Latin to techno, it can all be heard in the downtown nightclubs. Many major music acts have roots in Miami; Gloria Estefan, 2 Live Crew, Tag Team, Quad City DJ’s, Trick Daddy and Rick Ross to name a few.
With all the city has to offer combined with the warm tropical climate of South Florida, its easy to see why Miami is called the Manhattan of the South.
