Photo of the Day: Journey to the Center of the Earth

Image
These stairs lead you on a journey to the center of the Earth.  Well not really, but in the usually flat topography of Florida it sure feels that way.  Here at the Devil''s Millhopper State Park, 212 stairs descend into a 120 foot sinkhole.  Once you reach the bottom, the surface of the park seems to disappear above you, leaving you with a surreal tropical experience complete with trickling waterfalls all around.  (Photo: November 9, 2013)

Photo of the Day: Beaver Moon Rising

Image
The beaver moon rises above Southwest Florida, illuminating the nighttime sky.  Native American tribes and early settlers used the first full moon of November as a benchmark to begin setting beaver traps so they would have enough fur to survive the harsh winters.  With the close proximity of the moon to the Earth's orbit, the 2017 beaver moon will be the second brightest moon of the year.  The brightest moon will come next month during the Full Cold Moon on December 4.  (Photo: November 3, 2017)

Photo of the Day: World's Shortest Runway

When landing on a traditional runway seems to routine and boring what do you do?  Why you land on the top of a moving pick-up truck of course.  That's exactly what Greg Koontz did during his Alabama Boys comedy routine at the 2017 Florida International Air Show this weekend.  During the routine, he landed his Piper Cub on the top of a pick-up truck driving down the runway and then later proceeded to take-off from the same truck.  (Photo: October 14, 2017)
