Great Explorations
St. Petersburg, Florida: Located in downtown St. Petersburg is one of the country’s premier children’s museums. Great Exploration is a place where children of all ages come to interact and learn about the world around them. The interactive exhibits found here give them a hands-on feel of how everyday life functions.The 24,000 square foot museum opened to the public in 1987 and is located in downtown St. Petersburg. The museums permanent collection features exhibits on arts and sciences and allows the children to learn through role playing and interaction.
The permanent exhibits and their subject include:
- Animation Station: using a digital camera and computer enhancement, children are able to create their own animation skit.
- Bernoulli Station: learn about air pressure and movement of air using floating balls.
- Engine Company 15: a replica firehouse equipped with a fire engine bunker gear and more teaches the importance of fire safety.
- Fit 4 All Kids Ville: teaches about how good nutrition and exercise are the key to a healthy lifestyle.
- I Can Construct: a giant tree house and hands on displays teach about the construction industry.
- My First Market: a replica supermarket that allows kids to play store while learning about healthy diets and food groups.
- Orange Grove: here kids will pick, pack and ship oranges on a simulated orange grove in an exercise that promotes teamwork while learning about one of the Sunshine State’s biggest industry.
- Pull Yourself Up: children learn about how pulleys help move loads by strapping into a chair and pulling themselves into the air.
- Robot Lab: here you can create and play with your very own robot.
- Sound Waves: a display that shows how sound waves are created and move through a 3-D display.
- St. Pizza: learn about customer service and running a business in this replica pizzeria.
- Tennis Ball Launcher: combining two of the concepts learned in the museum; pulleys and air pressure, children launch tennis balls to see how far they can go.
- Touch for Sound: an interactive exhibit in which kids use sounds associated with an object to create a tune.
- Veterinary Office: a replica vet office allows the children to learn about caring for animals while simulating animal care at a vet clinic.
In addition to the permanent exhibits, the museum hosts many traveling exhibits throughout the year. They are also home to a preschool program as well as educational camps and school programs.
